The Significance of the Dodgers and the Dodger Stadium

At the beginning when Professor Hicks presented the researched paper I automatically knew i wanted to focus about- something of Los Angeles. I didnt know what since it was a very broad topic, I changed my topic twice since I wasn't finding any information. I ended up with the Dodgers. But in order to chose a topic that has a long history you need to have *PASSION or INTERESTED* for it, since you will be going into depth and along the way you learn many new things. As I began to look for my sources, I found useful to *meet up with Professor Hicks* she lend me a book, and it came quite handy. If your stuck ask for *HELP* dont be shy, at the end it'll be worth it. For my paper I used 4 books, which I only *read the parts that mentioned my topic.* I also read a lot of different articles that some where not useful. The most important thing when you have a big paper coming up is  *begin it right away* because you never if something will come up. I also suggested you take *advantage of the services campus offers* for our writing necessities.

Topic: The Significance of the Dodgers and the Dodger Stadium, and here are some useful/helpful sources I found, all of these are cited in MLA form.

Asian Folklore

Maria Patricia Santos

This researched paper should be given a lot of time because you need to have a lot of resources and information in order to start with your paper. I would recommend starting at least 4 weeks before it is due in order to have enough time. As recommended by Professor Hicks, start off with part III because that's where all your research goes. I would also recommend using a lot of books and also the CSULA database for journal articles. Also, choose a topic that you are really interested in so you it can be more interesting and fun for you.

My topic is about the similarities and differences of Asian folklore. I found a lot of interesting books in the library about different folklores all around Asia. Here are the few books I used:

Faurot, Jeanette. Asian-Pacific Folktales and Legends . New York: Simon & Schuster, 1995.         Print.
Giskin, Howard. Chinese Folktales. Lincolnwood, Ill: NTC Pub, 1997. Print.
Also, most books on different kinds of folklores are located on the 2nd floor-Palmer North G section
If you are looking for journal articles the JSTOR database is really helpful for you to find one. Here are some of the articles I found:

Women In Soccer

Ricardo Magdaleno
Women in Soccer
Throughout my experience with this paper i understood the impotance of understanding the material you are using to prove your point. Also time managment is key to success in this paper. I had a few problems finding information that would help me answer my question. My Question was, Why are men not taking women in soccer serious and if Women in Soccer is part of the "American Dream." If I would of known how stressful it is t combine different ideas to create one answer i would of definatly started sooner. I think that the best source I found was a Book called "Philosophic Inquiry in Sport" you can use this book for any sport to connect to an arguement.

La Llorona
Part 1: Reflection
In this researched paper for future students you should find a variety of sources. Especially ones from the library because those will be the best ones and you will be able to get the most information out of them. Also find evidence that helps for a counter argument. Yet, do not make it that good just good enough so you cannot seem bias and be able to prove that argument wrong in your next paragraph. Also starting early is always good because then you can get more feedback from your peers and even your professor. Do not forget to cite your sources as well because then if you don't you will not be credible. Always save yourself some time to elaborate on your sources and just use the quotes or information you find to better strengthen your opinion in your researched paper. Do not just write a paper about the sources you found. Also if you go off topic let your reader know that and tie it back into your paper so how. An example is even though  it sounds like I'm off topic this helps lead into my next point….
Do not stress over the length of the paper by the time you get to your actual research it will come naturally and you will know exactly what to write. Since parts one and two really help you open your eyes on what you actually want to write.
Part 2: Topic "La Llorona"
My topic was why is the La Llorona depicted as a negative begin and not just someone who is misunderstood. In my researched paper I came to the realization that she is evil and that she should not be felt sorry for nor should we have any remorse for her. Now the following are the sources that I found most useful for my researched paper. Now 1, 2, 4, and 8 can be found in the library. While 5, 7 can be found in the schools database under articles which are under jstor in database by name. While 3 and 6 are found online just type in the author or title of the text and they should pop up.

2.Anzaldua, Gloria. Prietita and the Ghost Woman.
3.Candelaria, Cordelia. "Letting La Llorona Go Or Re/Reading History's Tender Mercies."

Female Apperance

Have you ever read or seen a fantasy story were you imagine a beautiful, elegant princess waitng to be rescued by her one true love? Have you ever compared yourself to her wondering, the way I look I am not going to get a prince charming. My research paper is about how female appearances affect a story line and characters. In which the beauty of a woman seduces a man to make him go through rough challenges to save her. Therefore there has been other cases where the female image is not a lovely view to see, which adds a sinister taste of the tale. The sources I used are mainly films:

Psychology in Video Games

I did my research paper on Psychology in Video Games finding my sources using the Cal State LA database.  I picked the JSTOR database because it seemed like the most user friendly database compared to others offered.  I looked up "video game" and "psychology in video game" and searched through pages of articles finding anything related to my topic.  I took note of some and went back into them to read the abstract or intro to find if it is useful.  If I could change anything about this research paper is the amount of time I got to work on it.  Due to my late topic choice, I only had a week to search through a mass amount of articles.  I recommend time management above everything else.  Pick your topic as soon as possible, and do some research hear and there, instead of waiting till the weekend prior.  It was extremely stressful because I had not finished it, and I still needed to study for finals.  TIME MANAGEMENT is key.

Women's Fairy Tale Ending!

1.  Conducting the Research was a bit challenging and time consuming. To start off any research it could help very much if the topic is narrowed down to a specific area. If there is any complication with your topic it can help to ask your professor for any suggestions he/she might have. Follow any advice you consider helpful and explore a few areas around your topic because it really would suck if your are in the middle of writing a paper that is really going no where and you have to  start all over. Plus writing the paper is really not that hard, the hardest part is actually doing the research but once that is taken care of the paper writes itself. I believe that what would have helped me in this researched paper would be actually starting right when I knew we were going to write this paper. Professor Hicks notifies us with fair amount of time and you need to take advantage of that. Also she does mention many helpful resources and that is something everyone should take advantage of!

2.  Our research topic was "Why women were treated unfairly in Fairy Tale Marriage?"
The library is the best place to start off! also creating an access account so that why you could be able to access the library database from your house. A resource I found helpful for this researched paper was the movie The Five-Year Engagement because it is about marriage but specifically is a counterargument and that helps see the other side of what we were trying to answer. I think films help a lot because this type of movie is something many people hear about and that is something that will get the audience attention.

Superman: Not So Tough

  1) Trying to start the research was a bit time consuming and i suggest to start the research right after the assignment is given because then you have much time to think about what you're going to write and to find the sources that you need for the research. Starting off with Part 3 is the best thing you can do because it is the most important and it is what you learned about the research. After working on that part then it is a lot easier to write the rest of the parts. Manage you time very carefully because literally time flies and it is better to get your head together and start writing, researching for those sources ASAP. Make sure that there is enough time to go over your own paper because you will find things that don't make sense and you need to be clear about what you are trying to say. It is not hard at all, all you have to do is manage your time carefully and you will finish the researched paper in no time. I would have started the paper earlier if i would have known how hard it was overall to write it and search for the information so get your head together and start writing and searching as soon as the assignment is given!

2) My topic was about how Superman doesn't follow the male gender role and that he has a feminine side to his character. Most people would think that he is only masculine but you will be surprised when you figure out that he also has a lot of feminine features/characteristics.
I found two great books in the CSULA Library that talked about masculinity and femininity and they are:
-- Inclusive Masculinity by Eric Anderson
-- Popular Culture by Carla Freccero

and of course it would be GREAT to analyze both of the Superman films:
         -- Superman 1978 version
         -- Superman Returns 2006
you would have to carefully analyze these films and Superman's character and you will find a lot of important information.

Pop Princesses: The New Fairy tale Princesses?

  1. I believe the hardest part about the researched paper is constructing the idea or flow of the topic chosen. Knowing what I know now, I think I would have structured my researched portion differently. For example, I began my third part with Nicki Minaj because she's rather new to the pop scene but I think I should have maybe just included a tidbit on ALL the major pop stars so my argument would be more concrete. The whole idea is rather wishy-washy being that I don't want to just pour out tons of information. I want to try and keep the reader engaged SO I focused on Nicki Minaj and connect the rest towards the end. It is a hit or miss but I know she is relevant as of right now, so I do not regret my decision in using her to begin my essay. There is just this small part of me that thinks that maybe pouring out all would be more concrete but so much more boring.
  2. My topic is focused on Pop Stars and how they can possibly be the new variations of the story Cinderella, hence the titled "Pop Princesses: The New Fairy tale Princesses?" Here are some helpful sources I have come across over the period of the paper's proposal. Both can be found in JSTOR
Baker-Sperry, Lori, and Liz Grauerholz. "The Pervasiveness and Persistence of the Feminine Beauty Ideal In Children’s Fairy Tales." Gender and Society. 17.5 (2003): 711-26. Print.
Hennion, Antoine. "The Production of Success: An Anti-Musicology of the Pop Song." Popular Music. 3. (1983): 159-93. Print.

KING ARTHUR: MAN OR MYTH

1.                Conducting research is very time consuming, We would advise to start off looking for resources as soon as the assignment is given, so you can have more time to write the paper and revise it. Also if you are having problems with your topic, do not hesitate to ask the professor questions. It is better to be sure that your paper makes sense then wasting time writing a paper that doesn’t.  After doing the research we wish we would have known at the beginning how much work it is to look for good resources. Besides managing time more wisely we think the research went very well. It is not so hard when working with a partner than by yourself.
Our researched paper topic was King Arthur, more specifically, we wanted to answer whether King Arthur was a man or a myth. The most useful information we found was at the Cal State LA North Library.
S    A couple books we found the most helpful are:
-          King Arthur: in fact and legend by Geoffrey Ashe
-          Myth and National Identity in Nineteenth Century Britain by Stephanie L. Barczeski

-Katrina Ortiz-Chavez and Claudia Duarte

La Malinche

  1. Starting the paper was difficult at first because my partner and I were having a hard time finding    sources based on our research question. Therefore, we strongly recommend for students to take advantage of  P.A.I.R. because they can help you find sources. Moreover, the library reference can also help you in finding sources related to your topic. Personally we reached out to get help with our sources from our professor and it was great help. The main thing we wish we would have done differently is starting our paper earlier to take time wisely in finding sources. Writing our paper late caused us more stress and pressure and we were not able to in depth as we wanted to.

2.   Our research question is, how does La Malinche's actions affect modern women?
Journal Article -Indian Women as Cultural Mediators by Clara Sue Kidwell.

Psycholgical Effects Fairy Tales Cause in Children

The topic my partner and I chose to write our research paper on was child psychology. We wanted to relate our research paper to our major and incorporate some of the knowledge we gained throughout the course. By having the opportunity to choose our own topic based on our personal interest and own curiosities made the research paper a lot more interesting. It was more interesting because the topic was not given by the professor, instead it was chosen by my partner and I which played a huge role in writing our paper.

Our question was: Why do children love fairytales so much, and how do fairy tales affect children later in life?

Some advice I would give to future students who take the class would be to begin their research by identifying their topic. Next to think about the question they want to answer and learn more about and finally, proceed by finding useful sources and by gathering information to help throughout the investigation. Organization in this project is key. It is important because by organizing yourself throughout this assignment you will be able to structure your work and plan ahead so that you do not stress out. At first the paper may seem overwhelming because a lot needs to be done, but if you organize your work and break it down into different sections rather than doing it all at once you will enjoy this project.

Finding sources for our research paper was not difficult, but it was challenging because we had so much information to choose from that we did not know where to begin. The sources that we found to be the most useful were journal articles and books. The books were helpful because they gave us a broad idea about our topic, and the journals were useful because they were more specific and detailed. Some of the sources we used were:

"Andrea Lorenz." :: Home. Sitename.com, 2006. Web. 28 May 2012. <http://bananasaysno.com/>.

Heuscher, Julius E. A Psychiatric Study of Fairy Tales; Their Origin, Meaning and Usefulness. Springfield, IL: Thomas, 1963. Print.

Persecution of Witches

Raquel Toomer & Katherine Carmona
We would advise anyone doing this researched paper to pick a topic early and commit to it because time is precious during the research process. As everyone knows, DO NOT procrastinate. We both wish we had made up our minds early about a research question that we both shared a common interest in so that we wouldnt have to cram in all the research within two weeks. Pick a topic that you genuinely care about and are interested in because you will spend majority of your time reading about that specific topic.
Our research question was How did the persecution of witches in the past contribute to the way we view witches today in our culture?

Some of the most useful sources can be found on csula library article database using the keywords "witch trials"

Trickster Motif in Television Commercials

1. The research process is very involved. I had to do a lot of searching, reading, and selecting. The amount of research I did wasn't enough. I should have found more sources on advertisements from the library databases; they would have allowed me to do a more insightful analysis of the commercials I used in my paper.

2. Why and how is the trickster motif used in television commercials to sell a product? The most helpful sources in answering this question came from the course textbook. This is because one chapter dealt exclusively with advertisements and another was dedicated to obedience. The use of the textbook made it easy for me to connect my research topic with the course material. Here are my two most useful sources:

Fowles, Jim. "Advertising's Fifteen Basic Appeals." Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum. Ed. Laurence Behrens and Leonard J. Rosen. Boston: Longman, 2011. 539-556.

The Evolution of Batman

We were told to pick a topic for our researched paper that we were interested in.  With the new Batman movie being released this summer and also Batman being my favorite superhero I decided to do my researched paper on Batman.  At first I wasn't sure what to write about Batman but later decided to write about the history and evolution of Batman from when day one all the way until today.  I was doing my research on the library database for sources for my topic and couldn't find much sources that information about Batman that was relevant to what I was writing about.  However, I did find two books at the library which gave me plenty of information.  The books I used were The Great Comic Book Heroes by Jules Feiffer and also The Superhero Book Gina Misiroglu and David A. Roach.  Some advice to future students whether your topic is Batman or not is start on your research early so that you can start writing your paper early.  The last thing you want is wait until the last minute to research and then find out that you need to switch topics.  I am glad that I started research early because I almost switched topics a few times because I was having a hard time deciding what I should write about Batman and also having a hard time finding sources.
